Oscar Wilde - "The Picture of Dorian Gray"
(1890) 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'
- We love Oscar Wilde, but you can read this book however you want to, as a gothic classic, a bit creepy, sinister and weird or you can read it as Mr Wilde’s only novel or you can even read it as the LGBTQ tale which it certainly is or originally was. In fact even though the book still retains thinly veiled homesexuality, Wilde had to rewrite key parts of this book in order for his publisher to accept it. Why? Well, let’s just say the artist in the story (Basil) feels much more for Dorian Gray than Victorian society approved of - or approved of on the surface anyway. More than that? The book offers a great insight into that society as well as into the feelings of Mr Wilde. A must have for any bookcase.
